Punam Choudhary: The 3D Street Artist Bridging Reality and Imagination
Art can breathe life into the most mundane corners of our world, a notion embodied by the enchanting 3D street art of Punam Choudhary. From the bylanes of Chandannagar, West Bengal, Punam’s work has transcended geographic boundaries, resonating with an online audience now in the hundreds of thousands. Her life-like 3D drawings of rivers, mountains, and a whale breaching the street surface have become viral sensations, all crafted using simple materials like charcoal and chalk.
A Journey Sparked by Social Media
Punam’s journey began unexpectedly in 2019 when she and her husband Chandan stumbled upon TikTok. With a second-hand phone as their only investment, the couple quickly captivated a significant following. Chandan’s account amassed an impressive 2.5 lakh followers within 24 hours. Despite TikTok’s subsequent ban in India, the couple transitioned seamlessly to Instagram and YouTube, platforms where Punam continues to share her artistic process and tips, earning between 5 to 7 lakh annually.
Art Over Stereotypes
More than a source of income, Punam’s art serves as a powerful statement against social stereotypes. She has audaciously rejected the notion of paid collaborations, choosing to prioritize her artistic freedom above commercial gain. This principled stance has further endeared her to her audience, her integrity shining as brightly as her talent.
Mentoring the Next Generation
Despite the glamour of online fame, Punam remains firmly grounded, balancing her art with her responsibilities as a homemaker. Perhaps her most significant undertaking is her dedication to teaching art to underprivileged children, a testament to her belief in art’s transformative power. Through her actions, Punam upholds her late father’s dream of her becoming an artist while inspiring the next generation to chase their dreams, regardless of societal constraints.
