Black hoods, toxic concoctions and images of sexual violence were seized in a raid on student accommodation at South Africa’s oldest university which has struggled to shake off its apartheid-era links
Staff, responding to a student’s complaint, broke into locked rooms at the all-male Wilgenhof residence at Stellenbosch University and found what appeared to be sites of punishment and initiation daubed with graffiti that included pro-Nazi symbols.
A panel has been appointed to investigate last week’s discoveries and the activities of Nagligte, which in Afrikaans means night lights — the residence’s disciplinary committee. A recent photograph of the committee shows shows eleven students in black gowns seated behind a pig’s head on the floor. Also found was an indemnity, signed in 2023, giving consent
