Stadium is now abandoned with graffiti on walls and terracing overcome by nature

A much-loved football stadium, which has been left abandoned and overgrown, could soon be demolished.

Shawfield Stadium, on the outskirts of Glasgow, was the home ground of Clyde FC from 1898 to 1986. With the ground up for sale, the club was kicked out and forced to ground share with local rivals Partick Thistle and then Hamilton before moving to Broadwood Stadium in 1994. The club is now sharing with Hamilton again at New Douglas Park.

However, Shawfield remained operational as a greyhound track. Dog racing was first introduced in 1932 with the stadium hosting the Scottish Greyhound Derby from 1970 to 1985 and from 1989 to 2019.

The ground, which contains four bars, a restaurant, a cafe, and betting booths, has also hosted speedway, boxing and athletics over the years. However, the stadium has not reopened since the early days of the pandemic and has fallen into a state of disrepair.

Pictures taken late last year show derelict stands covered in graffiti where weeds have also taken root. The floodlights are still standing, but they may not be for much longer amid plans to flatten the site to make way for housing, a hotel and shops, reports GlasgowLive.

The proposals state: “Part of the wider Clyde Gateway masterplan, this mixed-use neighbourhood continues the regeneration of the area, delivering much-needed new homes and commercial uses, breathing new life into the area.

“Modern sustainable high-quality housing will use the latest low carbon and net-zero technology. For example, the nearby Dalmarnock District Heating system is available to the Shawfield site via the connections within the ‘Smart Bridge’ – the pedestrian and cycle bridge over the Clyde.

“In addition, proposed hotel and ancillary commercial uses will complement Glasgow’s newest business district, Magenta Business Park, with the overall site extremely well-served by transport and leisure links. This reinforces active travel connections to the city centre and wider.

“This proposed highly-sustainable development will, if consented, deliver considerable investment and employment opportunities for the Shawfield area.”
