NYPD: Officers sprayed with substance while responding to graffiti-related incident on Staten Island; Large police presence

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A large number of police personnel and vehicles responded to New Springville on Wednesday morning after an individual sought for questioning in connection with graffiti allegedly sprayed officers with an unknown substance.

The individual was tasered by police during the incident that occurred around 8:15 a.m. near the corner of Nome and Steinway avenues, according to a spokeswoman for the NYPD’s Deputy Commissioner of Public Information.

The individual was taken in for questioning, the police spokeswoman said.

Unsightly red graffiti mars a white fence at the corner.
