BROKEN ARROW, Okla. — Broken Arrow’s Main Street was taken over by the Broken Arrow Rose Festival and Chalk It Up! art festival on Friday and Saturday.
The two events were centered around a rose show and a chalk art competition, which people were able to view during the events.
Aside from Main Street’s normal offerings, people could also learn about roses from garden experts, buy from local artists, buy from food trucks and view street performers like the Rose Prince and Princess.
Jennifer Deal, a co-chair of Chalk It Up!, said the events bring about 10,000 people to Broken Arrow’s Main Street.
Caleb Ricketts, the Chalk It Up! marketing chair, said just as the Rose District has grown over time, so has Chalk It Up!.
“What I think is also special, is that Broken Arrow’s Rose District, this area here, is just about 10 years old, so basically just about as old as Chalk It Up! is itself, so as the Rose District has blossomed into this beautiful main street, our event has done the same,” he said.
Deal said she likes the wide range of people who participate in the chalk art competition.
“One of the things I really really like about this event is we have such a wide range of people that participate, so we will have chalk artists that have never put chalk to pavement before, but then we have professional artist that do absolutely amazing stuff and everyone just gets in there and makes,” she said.
While Saturday was the end of Chalk It Up!, the Rose Festival continues on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a rose themed kite flying. People will be given free kites to decorate and the Tulsa Wind Riders will fly their kites, have a candy drop and demonstrate kite fighting.
