Eye-catching works of art give the AKG Art Museum’s campus some added color and pop.

Two eye-catching works of art have appeared on the campus of the Buffalo AKG Art Museum. On the Elmwood side of the campus, the work LOVE (Red Blue Green) by Robert Indiana (American, 1928–2018) has been repositioned at the entranceway of the Museum, front and center, which is highly visible to anyone traveling along the gateway to the Elmwood Village.

According to the Robert Indiana website, “the artist chose these colors because of childhood memories of being on the road and frequently passing the red and green Phillips 66 sign, standing out against a blue sky.”

Indiana initially created “Love” as a card in 1964, to send to friends. Today, there are 50 LOVE sculptures found around the world. If there was ever a time that this message of LOVE was needed, it’s now. This particular sculpture is the perfect message to give us all a heartened boost as we go about our daily lives, in a world that could certainly use some more love.

A second sculptural work by artist Sarah Braman has been installed along the Lincoln Parkway side of the Campus. According to the Gallery, “The Art Prep team recently installed Sarah Braman’s “Stay,” 2022, which was part of the special exhibition ‘Sarah Braman: Finding Room’ at @flwgraycliff, on the museum’s grounds near the Seymour H. Knox Building.”

This interactive sculpture has now found a permanent home at the AKG Art Museum, which is the perfect setting for such a piece. Come spring, this optimal location will be within direct eyesight of a new patio that has been installed alongside the Museum’s entranceway (on Lincoln Parkway).

During a recent visit to Stay, I was surprised to come across a number of books that had been placed in one of the work’s cube-like window boxes. This is definitely the most modern and illuminating Little Free Library to pop up anywhere, not just in Buffalo, but possibly the world.
