Fortuna middle school bomb threat: Student apprehended after chilling graffiti confession

A student at Fortuna Middle School has been arrested and is now facing felony criminal threats charges after writing a threat to blow up the school, police say.

On Wednesday this week, Oct. 18, the Fortuna Police Department (FPD) says they received a report from staff at Fortuna Middle School, saying a written threat was found on an exterior wall, threatening to “blow up the school on 10-19-23.”

The following day, police say a safety plan was put into place for the school. School administrators reportedly sent notice to parents and officers searched the school’s campus throughout the night and before school. Police say the campus was secured and students were searched prior to entering school grounds. Throughout the day, the FPD says school resource officers and school staff continued to investigate the identity of the student responsible for writing the threat and they eventually identified the culprit using security cameras.

The FPD says the student who wrote the threat on the school wall was then taken into custody by police after confessing to school administrators. The student was transported and booked into the Humbolft County Juvenile Hall were they currently face felony criminal threats charges.

As part of their investigation, the FPD says officers searched the student’s home but found no further evidence.

On Wednesday evening, after notifying parents of the threat, the FPD says they began receiving numerous reports of the same threat being circulated through social media and students. Police determined there was no evidence to suggest that the student arrested was responsible for the social media portion of the threat. The FPD says the arrested student has no access to proper electronic devices needed to spread the threat.
