Threshold Studios has announced the programme for Frequency 2023, the 7th edition of Lincoln’s free biennial international festival for digital culture, with the theme as EMERGENCE, taking place from 26 – 29 October.
Frequency invites visitors and locals alike to experience Lincoln in an entirely new light as the city is transformed into a digital playground once more. Embracing this year’s Emergence theme, an exciting lineup of highly acclaimed international, national and place-based artists will exhibit and perform their work alongside place-based and new talent, inviting new opportunities for collaboration, creativity and discovery in and around the historic city.
As multi-disciplinary digital artworks intertwine with the city’s centre and surrounding areas, Frequency offers a fresh take on how digital culture can breathe life into public spaces and foster more inclusive cultural experiences. This year’s theme seamlessly interweaves the disciplines of art, science and philosophy, whilst at the same time bringing people together in shared civic and unconventional spaces. Through a varied programme of installations, performances and immersive experiences, visitors are invited to create, learn and play, as well as engage with timely themes such as the impact of AI, genetic selection, and how humans can co-exist with the natural environment.
Highlights:
– The Care Takers by Liminal Creative, a new performative sound installation that explores the human brain and memory, particularly in relation to dementia
– A curiosity box of fascinating creatures by Skulls and Robots, and Climate activist Beccy McCray’s take on co-existing with animals, created in collaboration with University of Lincoln
– Digital art in unlikely locations, such as the new project by Lumo Workshop and young creatives which will take place in Lincoln’s historic Postern Gate
– In two separate exhibitions, Tim Murray-Browne and Maria Mavropoulou explore how AI perceives itself, as well as the world around it
– Studio Go Go bringing VR swings inspired by Vincent Van Gogh’s flying machines to the city centre, made possible through the Government’s Be Lincoln Town Fund
Visitors are invited to discover distinct festival zones: the Discovery Zone, where Lincoln’s high street and city centre will be transformed into world of digital innovation, the Campus Zone, the festival’s central hub, featuring the University of Lincoln’s emerging talents, and The Twilight Zone, where visitors can explore digital installations after dusk.
