Chalk up another win for Niagara Street. Mortalis Brewing Company has opened its doors, which fills the brewery gap, with the absence of Resurgence Brewing Co (the brewery consolidated its operation in the Old First Ward).
Bill Breeser, who owns the building at at 1250 Niagara Street, told me that he’s very pleased to have another brewery on the street – especially one that is the caliber of Mortalis.
Mortalis, based out of Avon, NY, also operates The Richmond in Downtown Rochester. The Buffalo location is its third tasting room. The brewery also has distribution in 24 states and 11 countries. There are five owners: Paul and Gretchen Grenier, Jason Keifer, Josh Bauerlein, and Dave and Missy Luckenbach. Gretchen was working the front room this past Saturday, when Bill and I stopped in to scope out the place.
Earlier that day, Mortalis had held a beer release that drew an impressive crowd of beer enthusiasts, including 40 people who waited in line to get their hands on Green Wax (an Imperial Stout that spent 16 months in a Willet Family Estate Bourbon barrel before bottling). Gretchen informed us that they host a barrel-aged release once a month at the Niagara Street taproom, which has 24 taps.
An added bonus at Mortalis is its sweet relationship with Illumination Meadery, which is also based at 1250 Niagara Street, alongside the brewery (in the former Company B location).
For anyone looking to build out or expand upon their dream business, Breeser still has plenty of space within his arsenal of buildings along Niagara Street. Spaces range between 10,000 and 20,0000 square feet, and can be compartmentalized. Mortalis Brewing Company is one in a long list of businesses that Breeser has recently brought to the West Side. It would be great to see that momentum continue.
