Taubman Museum of Art hosts celebration to debut new ‘Swoon’ exhibit

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — The Taubman Museum of Art is inviting the community out to its opening celebration of the museum’s newest exhibit on Nov. 4.

To kick off the pieces of art, the museum is hosting a street party featuring a live DJ, street and dance performances, open galleries, food trucks, drinks, and more. Starting at 7 p.m., on Saturday, Downtown Roanoke will be filled with fun.

The new “Swoon” exhibit showcases the work of internationally renowned street artist and printmaker Caledonia Curry, also known as, “Swoon.” The Brooklyn-based artist is known as the first woman to gain large recognition in the world of street art.

Curry’s previous group and solo exhibitions have been featured in galleries around the world including the Museum of Modern Art in NY, the Mori Art Museum in Japan, the Skissernas Museum in Sweden, and more.

The new “Swoon” exhibit is a 20-year retrospective, that highlights the different patterns and textures. One of her pieces “Medea,” is a sculpture and sound installation that shares a series of biographical portraits as well as a switchboard with audio clips. The Taubman Museum of Art says the audio clips are gathered from psychology texts and fairy tales. It even included Curry’s dreams and childhood memories.

On Nov. 5, Taubman of the Museum of Art is hosting a member-exclusive preview day. At 2 p.m., members will get the chance to join in on the “Artist Talk.”

The “Swoon” exhibit will be available at the museum from Nov. 10 until March 10, 2024.
