Art is a mirror of time, a reflection of the ever-changing world we live in. Echoing a current era of rapidly advancing technology through the eyes of artists from across the globe, the world’s first Web 3.0 art fair returns to Hong Kong for its third run in the city. Held at the K11 Art & Cultural Centre, this year’s Digital Art Fair has once again partnered with LG to showcase the latest in digital art.

‘The Clouds 祥云’ (2023) and ‘The Streams 溪流’ (2023), Yang Yongliang
Chinese artist Yang Yongliang invites us to reflect on the realities of unrestrained urbanisation and industrialisation with The Clouds 祥云 and The Streams 溪流, eight minute long videos that depict moving digital collages. Displayed on LG OLED screens, Yang’s compositions are reminiscent of mystic shan shui paintings digitised to present rushing streams and wafting clouds. Upon closer inspection however, the mountains are complex superpositions of towering buildings, dilapidated urban villages, and construction cranes that give way to crystal-clear scenes of metropolitan life. Once meant to illustrate the immutability and tranquillity of nature in ancient Chinese culture, these landscapes now comment on the social truths of modern societies using the contemporary mediums from whence they came.

Get a glimpse into Refik Anadol’s virtual world. The renowned digital artist made history last week when the Museum of Modern Art acquired his artwork Unsupervised, marking the first generative AI artwork in the museum’s esteemed permanent collection. Now Anadol brings ‘Winds of Yawanawa’ to Hong Kong, an NFT art collection made in collaboration with the indigenous Brazilian Yawanawa community. With the hopes of preserving and shedding light on the tribe’s unique culture, this meaningful series comprises Data Paintings that harness weather data from the Yawanawa village in the Amazon rainforest, melding that with the creations of young Yawanawa artists. The result is mesmerising loops of constantly evolving shapes, textures, forms and colours.
‘Sacred Heart’ (1957) and ‘Heart Series’ (1965), Kim Whanki
First presented to the public at this year’s Frieze Soul 2023 through a collaboration between LG OLED and the Whanki Foundation, these original artworks by legendary Korean abstract artist Kim Whanki return for the Digital Art Fair. Brought to you by none other than LG themselves, these impassioned oil paintings are showcased on the transparent LG OLED T screens, creating an interactive experience that further expands the artwork’s playful disposition into its viewing experience.

The allure of divine luminescence, kaleidoscopic symmetry, and constant movement absorbs viewers into a soothing voyage across infinite realms, creating an almost transcendental viewing experience when projected into an enclosed chamber.
