Antisemitic graffiti found at DOT office in Newington, officials say

State officials are investigating after antisemitic graffiti was found at the Department of Transportation office in Newington this week.

The graffiti was discovered Wednesday morning in a bathroom on the Newington campus, according to an email that commissioner Garrett Eucalitto sent to staff. The DOT is headquartered at 2800 Berlin Turnpike.

“Antisemitism, and hate and bigotry of all forms, have no place at CTDOT,” Eucalitto wrote in the email. “Anyone who holds those beliefs in their heart is not welcome in the CTDOT family.”

According to DOT officials, the matter is being investigated internally. There is no active police investigation.

DOT officials said a similar incident involving antisemitic graffiti occurred at the Newington DOT office in July.

“Hate speech and bigotry will not be tolerated, and all of us have to stand up to this behavior when we see or hear it,” Eucalitto told staff.

“I want to encourage all of you to feel comfortable reaching out to me, the deputy commissioners, or the Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity, if you feel harassed, discriminated against, or unwelcome at work. My priority is your feeling safe and welcome at work, at all times.”
