It is safe to say on almost any given day an artist is painting on Carlisle Street. For decades, this has been true. And, for over a decade now, the artists have gathered once a year to present their masterpieces collectively during their Holiday Art Stroll. This traditional opportunity is coveted by art lovers, interior designers, art collectors, and individuals alike. The street is dynamic, with full-time and part-time artists flowing into and out of their respective studio spaces, all the while gathering inspiration for their colorful compositions. Over 50 artists’ paintings are available to homes and businesses this year on a first come, first served basis, as every painting is one-of-a-kind. There is a wide range of styles, sizes, mediums, genres, and price points. This stroll emphasizes showcasing unique creations by Columbia hands that may add joy to your surroundings year-round. The area is known by locals as the Carlisle Street Art District.
“We are a hidden gem,” said Cindi Betts of Jodi Jenkins Designs, “but we don’t want to be hidden.”
One-stop for One-step decorating and gifting—In addition to paintings, you will find an abundance of gifts for everyone on your list—children’s clothing and books, ceramics, jewelry, embroidered linens, furniture, rugs, custom-made pillows, stationery, sweets for stockings, and cocktail mixers for “Santas.”
The stroll stretches one block from the corner of Millwood Avenue and Carlisle Street to Daly Street. It features six storefronts including over 50 artists and 20 businesses in the order below.
The Mad Platter—Fired Arts Studio, ornament kits to-go (paint at home, return for firing), hot chocolate and treats for artists all day, walk-ins and reservations accepted, adult classes, kids classes, gift certificates, wheel throwing, wine bottle slumping, clay impressions, glass fusing, and more.
The Collective—A small business boutique that houses over a dozen local artists and businesses.
Viridian Gallery & Studio— A working artist studio featuring five women artists specializing in acrylics— Peggy Jacobs, Cathy Kline, Naomi Freedman, Carol Roof, and Leah Cherney.
OTM Gallery—Original Paintings by 30 Columbia artists—including a limited collection of collaborative paintings by Page Morris and Debra Paysinger, founder and resident artist Julia Moore’s painting studio is inside. Commissions and gift certificates are available. Julia will be personalizing copies of her new hardback coffee table book of art images and poetry, The Poetry of Painting —Buy four copies, Get one free.
Jodi Jenkins Des igns— Home décor to go, locally designed and manufactured gifts including Apothecary Soap Company and Jack Paper Co., original paintings, origami table and tree ornamentals, and interior design consultations by appointment.
Studio Carlisle—Art studio featuring Abigail Way, Chappy Manning, Kevin Smith, Laurie Kinnie, Nina Knowlton, and Cami Hutchinson. Artists will be painting. Refreshments will be served
The Carlisle Street Holiday Art Stroll will be held Saturday, December 2, 12–4 p.m. Event parking will be in grassy lot across from OTM Gallery, 3142 Carlisle Street, wheelchair accessible.
