This past spring, the library hosted the Witness to Change book discussions with Southeastern Louisiana University American literature instructor Bruce Craft that were so well received, he will soon return for another round of talks.
Starting in mid-November, Craft will lead a three-session review of the life and work of Kate Chopin, best known for her novel “The Awakening” set in Grand Isle and New Orleans, as well as her short stories based on the lives of the Creole and Cajun people she had observed while living in Louisiana. She is also highly recognized for the short stories “Désirée’s Baby” and “Madame Celestin’s Divorce.” The discussions will take place:
• Session 1: Nov. 15 at the Slidell Library
• Session 2: Nov. 29 at the Causeway Library
• Session 3: Dec. 13 at the Covington Library
The first two will focus on her short stories and Session 3, “The Awakening.” All sessions will be held from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., and registration is required at the library’s website, sttammanylibrary.org/events.
Of greater interest to the library’s younger patrons, something Jurassic-like always makes its way to the stacks each November, and this year will be no different.
The library will commemorate Dinovember with family drop-in celebrations all month long. Events will range from crafting activities to scavenger hunts and on one special occasion at the Slidell library, there will be a Dinosaur Tea Party — complete with dinosaur attire, if desired. The list of celebrations includes:
• Nov. 2, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the South Slidell Library
• Nov. 9, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Slidell Library
• Nov. 15, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Pearl River Library
• Nov. 16, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Madisonville Library
• Nov. 21, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Causeway Library
In other matters, the Friends of the Slidell Library will hold a Second Saturday Special Sale on Nov. 11 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. inside the Library at 555 Robert Blvd. Second Saturday Special Sales include several hundred specially selected items on a particular subject or theme. This sale will include comic books, graphic novels, a selection of vintage books, newspapers and magazines, and titles related to popular culture. Sale items will have prices generally ranging from $1 to $3 each.
