Mysterious painted hearts are being removed
More than 100 hearts painted around La Jolla are being removed from light poles, metal signs and sidewalks, authorities said.
Enhance La Jolla, which administers the Maintenance Assessment District for The Village, has been working to remove the graffiti. Enhance La Jolla has the authority to enhance services provided by the city of San Diego, including graffiti and litter abatement, landscape maintenance, street and sidewalk cleaning, and additional trash collection.
MAD Manager Brian Earley told the La Jolla Light that “anything that is put up in the public right of way” is brought to the group’s attention for removal.
“We treat all graffiti the same, regardless of what it is,” Earley said.
He said the person responsible for the hearts is unknown, but he asked that the person “cease and desist … because we have to take them off.”
The ones on sidewalks are being removed as part of Enhance La Jolla’s routine power-washing through vendor Urban Corps of San Diego County. With the power-washing, which is done at night, the wastewater is collected separately to avoid discharging it into the storm drain.
Graffiti on signs and other fixtures is removed with a solvent.
“We have removed more than 100 [hearts] already, and we have to remove them all because, if we don’t, it tells people that it is OK to do this, and it’s not,” Earley said.
He added that the board welcomes information about who is behind the hearts. Enhance La Jolla can be contacted at (858) 444-5892 or by email at manager@enhancelajolla.org.
