Syracuse University reports antisemitic graffiti in Bird Library

The Syracuse University Department of Public Safety (DPS) is investigating antisemitic language that was found on a cubicle desk on the first floor of Bird Library. The bias report was submitted anonymously to the department on Wednesday, November 1.

DPS says the graffiti was quickly removed and officers thoroughly canvassed the library and did not find any additional graffiti. Investigators are reviewing available video footage near the affected area and DPS has reached out to Syracuse Police and New York State Police.

“In a time of such heightened fear, as a community, we must confront and reject hate and take actions that demonstrate support for and empathy toward those feeling especially vulnerable,” says Craig Stone, DPS Chief. “Our investigators are continuing their review of available video footage as we work towards a resolution. I am thankful for the swift removal of the graffiti by Facilities Services and for the anonymous reporter who brought this to our attention,” Stone said.

Syracuse University keeps a log of all bias incident reports on a website that can be accessed here.

Prior to the discovery of the graffiti on Wednesday, the most recent reported bias incidents were posted in October.
