Who is Banksy? Real name ‘revealed’ in unearthed BBC interview

Banksy’s real name appears to have been revealed in an unearthed interview with the elusive artist 20 years ago.

It is rare even to hear the secretive street artist’s voice, so the uncovered interview with former BBC arts correspondent Nigel Wrench, dating back to 2003, provides a unique glimpse at the man behind the art.

In one of the earliest known radio interviews with the artist, who was then in his twenties, Banksy appears to have revealed his name. Asked if it was “Robert Banks”, the artist responded: “It’s Robbie.”

Speaking as his show Turf War opened in east London, the Bristol-born artist was unapologetic about his method of using vandalism as art.
