The University of Nicosia MA Digital Art & Design students invite you to the opening of the exhibition ‘All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace’, presenting projects developed during the Installation Art & Digital Practices course.
The title is taken from the Adam Curtis documentary with the same title, which in turn references the poem ‘All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace’ by Richard Brautigan, first published in 1967.
In the poem, a technological utopia is presented in which humans and technology work together for the greater good and in harmony with nature. It is uncertain however to what degree this poem is earnest or ironic. As Curtis shows us in the 3-part documentary, there is a bleak flipside where technology and power/control go hand in hand, forming and informing oppressive political regimes and contributing to the harvesting of personal data and extraction of natural resources.
