Greensboro Police Department: Investigating after swastika was found graffitied on Holocaust memorial

CHANGES. POLICE IN GREENSBORO ARE INVESTIGATING AFTER SOMEONE VANDALIZED A PROMINENT JEWISH MONUMENT DURING HANUKKAH. THIS HAPPENED LATE FRIDAY AFTERNOON AT THE WOMEN’S HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL IN LEBAUER PARK. YES, SOMEONE DREW A SWASTIKA INSIDE THE STAR OF DAVID AT THE. SHE WOULDN’T TAKE OFF HER BOOTS. MEMORIAL CREWS HAVE SINCE REMOVED THAT GRAFFITI. THIS IS VIDEO OF THE SCULPTOR MAKING A CLAY MODEL OF WHAT WOULD LATER BECOME THE SEVEN FOOT TALL BRONZE MONUMENT ON THE WOMEN OF THE SHOAH. IS A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION THAT CREATED AND PUT UP THE SCULPTURE WHICH WAS REVEALED BACK IN APRIL OF THIS YEAR. IT’S BASED ON A NAZI PHOTO FROM 1941 OF SHOWING A GROUP OF JEWISH WOMEN RIGHT BEFORE THEY WERE EXECUTED. IT IS THE FIRST MONUMENT IN THE ENTIRE STATE HONORING FEMALE HOLOCAUST VICTIMS. THE SCULPTOR SAYS IT IS HEARTBREAKING AND HORRIBLE AND THAT IT SHOOK A LOT OF PEOPLE. WHAT IT SAYS TO ME IS THAT WE NEED EDUCATION, THAT HATE THESE KIND OF CRIMES HAPPEN WHEN PEOPLE AREN’T EDUCATED. AND WHEN WE AS A COMMUNITY DON’T SAY, NO, THIS IS NOT HOW WE HAVE PUBLIC DISCOURSE. SO I’M REALLY A FIRM BELIEVER OF THAT. WHAT ELIE WIESEL SAID, THE OPPOSITE OF LOVE ISN’T HATE, BUT INDIFFERENCE. CONGRESSWOMAN KATHY MANNING, WHO REPRESENTS GREENSBORO AND IS JEWISH HERSELF, POSTED ON, QUOTE, I’M HORRIFIED AND SADDENED THAT THE HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL IN GREENSBORO KNOW SHE WOULDN’T TAKE OFF HER BOOTS, WAS DESECRATED WITH A GRAFFITI SWASTIKA. THIS DISGUSTING DISPLAY OF ANTI-SEMITISM HAS NO PLACE IN GREENSBORO. SHE GOES ON TO SAY MY HEART GOES OUT TO FELLOW — IN OUR COMMUNITY AND TO THE HOLOCAUST SURVIVORS AND THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS WHO WERE FORCED TO FACE THIS ABHORRENT DISPLAY OF HATE. I WILL CONTINUE TO WORK
