Sotheby’s Shatters Records with $35 Million in Digital Art Sales

Sotheby’s, the acclaimed auction house with a legacy stretching back 279 years, has made a landmark imprint on the digital art market this year. Michael Bouhanna, the company’s head of digital art, announced that the firm registered nearly $35 million in digital art sales in 2023, marking it as a stellar year for the burgeoning sector.

Record-Breaking Sales

Among the highlights of Sotheby’s digital art achievements was a live auction that attracted 300 attendees and reaped $12 million in sales. The auction house also established a new benchmark for an individual digital artwork, selling Dmitry Chernyak’s non-fungible token (NFT) ‘Ringers #879’ for a staggering $6.2 million.

Sotheby’s Metaverse and Beyond

Throughout 2023, Sotheby’s conducted over 25 auctions that either concentrated on or included digital art. In addition, the firm debuted Sotheby’s Metaverse, a blockchain-based marketplace designed for secondary NFT trading. Looking forward, Sotheby’s plans to refine its strategies in the primary market and continue to support creators in the digital realm.

The NFT Boom

Sotheby’s entered the NFT scene in April 2021 by auctioning a work by digital artist Pak. Since then, it has participated in several record-breaking digital art sales. The resurgence of the NFT space has coincided with a recent bullish run of Bitcoin, with total transaction volume nearing $1 billion in November and the average NFT transaction value increasing 114%. This upswing indicates a growing willingness among users to engage in higher-value trades.

However, it’s crucial to keep in mind that investments in crypto assets like NFTs are unregulated and may not be suitable for all investors. Such investments carry the risk of complete loss and are not targeted at or accessible to investors in Spain.
