Denver’s First Friday Art Walks Kick Off 2024 with Johnny Draco’s Exhibition and ‘Off the Walls’ Podcast
Denver’s First Friday Art Walks, a monthly event cherished by the city’s art enthusiasts, kicked off 2024 with a captivating array of artistic expressions. The evening of January 5th, held from 6 to 9 p.m., was particularly noteworthy for the opening of a solo exhibition by the emerging artist in residence at the Art District on Santa Fe, Johnny Draco.
Conscious with the Energy: Draco’s Artistic Manifesto
The exhibition, titled ‘Conscious with the Energy,’ showcased a series of new artworks by Draco, displaying his multidisciplinary prowess. Attendees were not only treated to the sight of his completed works but also got a chance to witness the artist in action during a live mural painting at the district’s headquarters at 858 Santa Fe Dr.
Draco’s collection is an embodiment of presence and adaptability, drawing parallels to the fluidity of water. The artworks echo a mindful message, emphasizing the conscious use of energy and encouraging viewers to become more in tune with themselves.
Off the Walls: A Conversation about Street Art in Denver
Adding to the artistic ambiance, the event also featured a special popup that introduced attendees to Emily Williams and Kibwe Cooper, hosts of Denverite and Colorado Public Radio’s podcast, ‘Off the Walls.’ The podcast is a comprehensive exploration of Denver’s vibrant street art scene, offering insights into murals, artist narratives, social activism, and local stories.
Among the topics discussed are the city’s response to the Black Lives Matter protests and the challenges faced by artists in a traditionally male-dominated field. Particularly highlighted is the story revolving around the Welton Street mural of Fathima Dickerson, a testament to the power of art in voicing societal issues.
The Art Walk Continues
The ‘Conscious with the Energy’ exhibition will continue to imbue the Art District on Santa Fe with Draco’s artistic energy until March 2024. Denver’s First Friday Art Walks promise to continue their tradition of celebrating the city’s dynamic art scene, providing a platform for emerging artists like Draco to showcase their talents while engaging the community in stimulating artistic discourse.
