Artificial Intelligence, or AI, has already been seamlessly integrated into some of our daily routines: Hello, Siri and Alexa! The incorporation of AI into the creative process of art was a natural step, given its broad capabilities. Following in the footsteps of video, digital art and NFTs (non-fungible tokens), this fusion of technology and artistic expression has given rise to a compelling wave of AI-generated art. Challenging traditional ideas of creativity and prompting both enthusiasm and skepticism within the art world, AI-generated art is a medium that has become increasingly prominent in the past few years.
Some contemporary artists have embraced AI as a groundbreaking medium, using computer algorithms to create artwork that blurs the boundaries between the human touch and machine precision. One notable application is in the area of generative art, or artworks created with the use of algorithms, usually programmed by artists. These algorithms autonomously produce visuals, often in real-time, based on pre-defined rules and parameters set by the artist.
While it may be challenging to grasp at first, AI in art creation can be compared to various historical techniques and innovations that transformed the artistic landscape. The invention of photography, for example, introduced a new way of capturing and representing reality, challenging traditional artistic methods. The printing press revolutionized the distribution of art and knowledge, making it more accessible. Similarly, AI broadens the reach to both creating and enjoying art in the digital era.
