Madhav Kohli: The AI Artist Reimagining ’90s Wedding Photos

Madhav Kohli, a new-age artist from Gurugram, has been making waves in the digital art world with his unique blend of AI and art. His latest project, ‘Aapke mummy papa ki shaadi,’ is an AI art series that reimagines ’90s wedding photographs, drawing inspiration from his parents’ wedding CD.

From Photoshop to AI Art

Kohli’s journey into digital art began in his teens, dabbling with Photoshop and exploring various photo-editing platforms. His big break came with Midjourney, an open AI text-to-image generator. With this powerful tool, he created a viral AI art series in 2023, catapulting him into the limelight.

Recreating Indian Aesthetics and Storytelling

Kohli’s work focuses on Indian aesthetics and storytelling, often breathing new life into the past with modern digital tools. His wedding series, in particular, has struck a chord with viewers. He meticulously recreates the essence of ’90s weddings, paying attention to technical details such as low aperture and grainy textures to evoke a sense of nostalgia.

AI in Art: A Democratizing Force

While AI has its limitations in image generation, Kohli views its integration into art as a positive evolution. He sees it as a democratizing force, expanding the boundaries of artistic expression. In April 2023, he founded a virtual studio, Madoli Creative, further cementing his commitment to AI art. He has also partnered with Lenovo for their ‘Brave New Art’ series.

In Kohli’s view, art must continue to evolve with technology, as it has throughout history. His work is a testament to this belief, transforming the way we view and interpret art in the digital age.
