The Cailleach, created by Vera Bugatti has been shortlisted for the Best in World Category of the Street Art Cities Awards.
This wonderful piece was created in August 2023 and the ancient deity of the landscape welcomes people to the town of Drogheda, with a brand-new mural as part of DRAWDA, Drogheda’s Urban Art Trail.
The mural depicts the Cailleach, divine sorceress who is associated with the creation of the land and weather.
Her wise face gazes over the River Boyne from her home in Dominic’s Street, Drogheda.
In Irish mythology, The Cailleach rules over winter, and was the creator of the Neolithic cairns (stone stacks) at Loughcrew by dropping stones from her apron as she jumped from hill to hill.
Italian artist Vera Bugatti, an expert in anamorphic street painting, transformed the street with an awe-inspiring portrayal of The Cailleach which stands tall, meticulously crafted through the intricate layering of paint, resulting in a symphony of vibrant tones that dance across the Dominic Street Gateway.
She is just one of a series of murals on the Drawda Urban Art Trail:
Fionn MacCumhaill and the Salmon of Knowledge on the Fitzwilliam Court building in Dyer St by Ciarán Dunlevy.
Étaín, the heroine of Tochmarc Étaíne, one of the oldest and richest stories of our Mythological Cycle, on Meat Market Lane by Nina Valkhoff.
Boann, Goddess of the Boyne by Lula Goce at Abbey Lane.
Dagda, leader of the Tuatha Dé Danann by Russ on Lawrence St.
Amergin, famous bard, poet and judge of the Milesians, by AERO at Drogheda Port.
The Morrígan, a Triple Goddess, with shapeshifting powers by This Is Friz on Patrick St!
Nina Valkhoff creator of Etain and Lula Goca creator of Boann, who both worked on pieces in Drogheda in 2022, have been shortlisted for the 2023 award for their work in Netherlands and Spain
“We would encourage all people who enjoy this piece to give it a vote via the link,” says Trevor Connolly, CEO of Love Drogheda.
