Broward County, FL – A 30-year-old man was arrested for using paint to cover up pro-Palestinian graffiti on the side of a South Florida highway.
Yoni Maimon, a 30-year-old South Florida resident, faced charges of criminal mischief after he was found using spray paint to cover pro-Palestinian graffiti on a South Florida highway near Marina Mile Boulevard.
According to reports, Maimon acted on instructions from his employer to cover the graffiti, believing it to be a “terrorist organization” based on his Israeli background.
When Florida Highway Patrol Troopers arrived at the scene, they found Maimon with a spray paint can and subsequently arrested him.
Despite Maimon’s actions being an attempt to cover up what he perceived as hate speech, he was taken into custody and spent nine hours in Broward County jail.
His employer, Eran Hazan, defended Maimon, stating that the troopers’ actions were excessive and that Maimon was merely trying to counteract messages he believed to be detrimental.
The incident has sparked discussions about the interpretation of Florida’s vandalism laws, with Maimon and Hazan arguing that their intent was not malicious.
Maimon has since secured legal representation, expressing that he will contact city officials for future graffiti removal requests.
