Hartley County offering reward after graffiti found on Channing ISD roof

CHANNING, Texas (KFDA) – Vandals struck the Channing ISD building last week, leaving behind hundreds of dollars in damages.

Channing ISD officials say between Monday and Thursday of last week, graffiti was spray painted on the roof and bricks along with other areas of the building.

“People just can’t believe it happened in Channing, you know, you would think of seeing graffiti or something like that in a larger community or larger district, but we didn’t suspect anybody to do it in Channing,” said Dr. Misty Heiskell, superintendent of Channing ISD.

Channing is currently going through the security footage seeking to identify the culprits.

“Graffiti falls under the criminal mischief laws and so if the cleanup of this graffiti, if that number goes about $750, that makes it a felony,” said Hartley County Sheriff Chanze Fowler.

The school says a main concern with this graffiti vandalism is safety. The superintendent says there are many obstacles on the roof that can be dangerous and she doesn’t want anyone injured over something like this.

“I just don’t understand why someone would do that to a school building. It’s not an innocent act, it has implications, you know, for our school district and for our community,” said Heiskell.

Authorities encourage anyone that was involved to turn themselves in. The Hartley County Sheriff’s Office is offering $1,000 reward if your tip leads to an arrest.
