Starbucks Korea’s NFT Initiative Boosts Use of Personal Cups

Starbucks Korea has taken a significant leap towards sustainability, leveraging blockchain technology to reduce the use of disposable cups. In a two-week campaign that ran from January 16, the coffee giant encouraged its Starbucks Rewards members to order using their personal cups through the Starbucks app, rewarding their eco-friendly choices with unique Starbucks NFTs.

Driving Sustainability Through Innovation

Throughout the initiative, customers could earn eco-stamps, limited to three per day, which could be exchanged for unique Starbucks NFTs. The campaign saw an impressive participation of 260,000 customers, who collected around 600,000 eco-stamps. This resulted in a significant 49% increase in personal cup orders via the app and an overall usage increase of 32%.

NFTs as Symbols of Commitment

Participants could earn three tiers of NFTs: ‘Basic NFT’ for five stamps, ‘Creative NFTs’ for 15 stamps, and ‘Artist NFTs’ for 20 stamps. The latter two categories were limited to 20,000 and 1,000 NFTs, respectively. These NFTs serve as digital art tokens, symbolizing the user’s commitment to environmentally friendly practices. To encourage widespread participation, each account was only awarded one NFT, and these tokens could not be gifted, sold, or traded.

An Ongoing Commitment to the Environment

As a testament to its commitment to sustainability, Starbucks Korea will display the NFT artworks at its Jongno R branch until the end of February. The company has seen a significant rise in reusable cup adoption over the past year, with a record 29.4 million personal cups used. This initiative represents Starbucks Korea’s ongoing efforts to promote environmental consciousness and reduce waste.
