Inside Out: Military Veterans in Perth Prison Unveil Art Exhibitio…

An art exhibition with a difference, ‘Inside Out’, is set to captivate audiences in Kinross this month, showcasing artworks created by military veterans serving time in Perth Prison and Castle Huntly. This unique event, a collaboration between the Scottish Prison Service and the veterans charity SSAFA, not only highlights the therapeutic power of art but also supports veterans in the community by funneling proceeds from artwork sales back into veteran aid programs.

Art as a Means of Transformation

Launched following the success of the Art As Therapy project at Perth Prison last year, ‘Inside Out’ aims to provide incarcerated veterans a platform to rediscover their sense of self-worth through painting. Many participants, who hadn’t touched a paintbrush since their school days, tapped into their memories or imaginations to fuel their creativity. According to Perth Prison governor, Andy Hodge, this initiative not only combats the monotony of prison life but also significantly benefits the mental health of the participants. Hodge emphasizes that the act of selling their art for SSAFA is a pivotal step for these veterans to demonstrate their continued value to society.

Supporting Veterans Inside and Out

With former members of the armed forces comprising about 3% of the prison population, the need for specialized support is clear. Perth Prison has established a veterans office to facilitate this, with SSAFA volunteers providing crucial practical and emotional assistance. Andy Middlemiss, SSAFA Perth and Kinross branch chairman, praises the Art As Therapy project for its dual role as a rehabilitation tool and a means of engaging veterans with the broader community. He firmly believes in the principle that ‘a veteran is a veteran,’ regardless of their current circumstances.

Event Details and Expectations

The exhibition will feature 50-60 pieces and is scheduled to be displayed at St Pauls, Muirs, Kinross on March 16-17, from 10am to 3pm on both days. Some of the artist-veterans, now residing at Castle Huntly open prison, hope to attend the event. This exhibition not only offers a unique glimpse into the talents and inner worlds of these veterans but also serves as a crucial fundraiser for SSAFA’s ongoing support work across Scotland.

The ‘Inside Out’ exhibition stands as a poignant reminder of the resilience and creativity of the human spirit, even in the face of adversity. It underscores the importance of providing platforms for expression and support to those who have served their country, highlighting the society’s role in aiding their reintegration and healing.
