Little Rock (KATV) — Urban renewal and aesthetic projects are set to impact the Natural State’s capital.
A new mural is set to be installed along the pavement at the intersection of South Main and 13th streets in Little Rock’s SOMA district.
On Tuesday, the Downtown Little Rock Partnership (DLRP) and its associates, the City of Little Rock, SOMA 501, Inc. and SOMA BAN issued a Request for Qualifications from artists who could create on the intersection’s asphalt.
The project is funded by a grant from the Bloomberg Philanthropies Asphalt Art Initiative, which is installing similar works in 25 cities across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
According to the DLRP, the project aims to:
- Improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists;
- Beautify the historic SOMA streetscape and encourage visitors to spend more time in the area;
- Slow vehicular traffic, while increasing pedestrians and cyclists,
- Bring more art to this burgeoning neighborhood and be the first street surface installation at a full intersection in the city,
- Promote collaboration and civic engagement in the community.
Officials are looking for artists within the community to create the installation. A grand total of $15,000 dollars will be provided to the chosen artist. This money will fund the artist’s personal stipend, supplies, transportation to and from the site, and lodging during the installation process. DLRP will manage the funds.
Artists will be able to rely on DLRP staff and volunteers for assistance as they complete the installation.
Applicants are asked to submit their portfolios and materials by email to PublicArt@downtownlr.com. The submission deadline is March 25.
