‘Young at Art’ winners show soul in work

Art communicates across ages, expressing concepts and inspiring thought. A panel of judges reviewed works from dozens of student artists from six local schools. Paintings, digital art, photography, etching and the like were all as varied as the high-school students that created them. Each work was submitted to the Rotary Club of Los Altos, along with an artist’s statement, for the “Young at Art” competition. Art consultant and juror Carol Dabb declared, “The art must have a soul.”

Lexi Davis’ digital artwork “Curtains” pictures a green hedge-maze garden, and blue sky with foreboding dark clouds in the distance. The “curtain” of this landscape is pulled away to reveal people in a stark setting wrought in grey tones. Davis states, “I wanted to show that things aren’t quite what they seem, when talking about human trafficking” a topic that she had researched for an English essay. This painting received first place for Lexi Davis, taught by Leo Florendo at Freestyle Academy of Communication Arts and Technology.
