A new club on campus has turned a new page and drawn in more participants.
The graphic design club, led by junior fine arts student Michele Ko with professors’ support, began to conduct regular meetings at the beginning of March.
“I created this club mainly because I’m going into graphic design and not a lot of people take the graphic design courses,” said Ko. “So, I wanted to make it more known to everyone on campus.”
Ko worked alongside assistant professor of graphic design Dr. Siriporn Peters. Peters has taught at the university level since 2000 but is new to Morehead State University.
Peters drafted a curriculum map for the Bachelor of Fine Arts in graphic design, but until that option is offered to students, she said the club is a great way for students to gain credentials and experience.
“The graphic design club is another unit that is very important for students to promote themselves and help the community,” said Peters.
Before the club officially started meeting, students with a passion for graphic design used their skills to help other organizations on and off campus. They designed a t-shirt to help fundraise for Inscape, MSU’s literary magazine and helped advertise for their upcoming auction.
The club aims to be a welcoming space for anyone interested in graphic design, especially students who hope to add pieces to their portfolio. Ko said the club is not of a specific group of people.
“It’s not like you have to be an art major, you can be anyone,” said Ko. “You can be an engineer and be like, ‘Oh, I like graphic designing, I’ll join this club,’ or, ‘Oh, I’m in nursing, I’ll join this club. Why not?’”
The graphic design club is focused on digital art such as Adobe Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop. Ko is Adobe certified and said Adobe products change yearly so students need to keep getting certified.
With Ko’s knowledge and assistance, students will get used to Adobe products. Students can also try physical work like screen printing with vinyl cutting and print their own designs on t-shirts, mug cups, keychains and notebooks.
Ko said their goal is to spread information about the club and get more students interested so graphic design classes are not canceled in the future.
“In a way, we are promoting graphic design to pique people’s interests, but also, I personally love graphic design and I’m getting into the field,” said Ko. “I’m trying to make it my career, so I’m just trying to learn more every day.”
