‘Euphoria Dystopia’ at Black House Gallery

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – An art show that combines gothic fantasy with cheerful street art is coming to Black House Gallery tomorrow.

For one night only, ‘Euphoria Dystopia’ will be on display at the gallery. It features pieces from Binghamton-based artists James Rubio and David Francisco.

Rubio has displayed his art all over the world. He says his art is very happy but has a level of sadness to it as well. He also makes political paintings.

For the first time, Rubio will be showcasing his sculptural installation.

He says his vision is for people to feel like they’re walking into another universe.

“It’s about creating a space and creating a completely different environment than a traditional gallery or than a traditional room that you’re used to. It’s equally euphoric as it is dystopic, kind of like the times right now,” said Rubio.

Francisco opened Black House Gallery around two years ago.

He exhibits his own art as well as the work of many local artists for events such as First Friday.

Francisco’s pieces are horror themed, depicting monsters and fantasy creatures.

He says he has always found the dark atmosphere very cool.

“If you look around, you’ll see that all of this stuff is fantastic. Nothing is based in reality. And in that way, I can go wherever I’d like. The possibilities are limitless,” said Francisco.

Also on display will be ‘Dia-Bunnys’ created by Francisco and his wife Elvisa Fafulovic.

The show will be held from 6 to 10 p.m.

There will also be music, refreshments, and a showing of the 1980s film Wild Style.
