LIVERPOOL, N.Y. — Hate speech found graffitied on a sign at a local middle school is being investigated by the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office.
The Sheriff’s Office told CNY Central it is investigating after hate speech was found graffitied on a sign at Chestnut Hill Middle School, part of the Liverpool Central School District.
A spokesperson for the sheriff’s office says a community member found it and called 911.
There were racial and homophobic slurs written on the sign, as well as a threat with a drawing of a gun on the other side.
Liverpool CSD Superintendent Dan Henner says they’re cooperating with deputies investigating the incident, and hope to find the person responsible. The district shared two photos with CNY Central of potential suspects involved in the incident, with a time stamp dated April 6, 1:55 a.m.
“For these folks, it’s also learned behavior that has been passed down for many, many generations like a family heirloom,” said NAACP Western Region Director Linda Brown-Robinson in response to the incident.
She also believes that as punishment, the suspects should serve time volunteering with civil rights organizations for at least two years.
