UC to host 3rd mural painting session

Two down and one to go.

Union City-area residents are invited to come out for a painting session of the third downtown mural.

The paint day session will be held Friday, June 14, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Main Street Art Center, 7 N. Main St.

The event is open to all ages. Those wanting to participate do not need to preregister. They only need to show up. All materials will be provided.

This is the final of three painting sessions. The first was held March 5 at the Union City Senior Center. That mural was placed on the side of the Ace Hardware building near the railroad tracks at East High and Main Streets.

The second session was held April 24 at the Main Street Art Center. That mural was placed along the side of the Congdon Hotel on North Main Street.

The mural artists from the Looking Glass Art Project – Tom Ferraro, Ed Grout and Steve “Mik” Mikolajewski – provided an option for the Union City community to be a part of painting the murals.

The Looking Glass Art Project is a project designed to encourage collaborative input by having participants tell their stories and then turn those stories into public art.

The murals project is being funded by an Erie Community Foundation Shaping Tomorrow grant.

The murals are painted on polytab fabric and then applied to the wall. This is the same process that was used on the mural in the Municipal Parking Lot on South Main Street, which was done by Ferraro and Mikolajewski.

Borough Manager Cindy Wells, said, so far, participation from the community “has been wonderful.”

“We welcome everyone to come out and be a part of this third mural project,” Wells said. “It’s a community project and the community has been very supportive of it.”
